Munising - Alger County's largest municipality, is located on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Munising is the western entrance to the Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore, Hiawatha Nat'l Forest and Grand Island Recreation Area.

Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore Park has been a major attraction for many years. These colorful and majestic rock formations may be viewed from a cruise boat or land. The many waterfalls within the Park require hikers, which reveal their beauty. The Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore has much to offer including the remains of shipwrecks near the AuSable Light Station, sand dunes and Sable Falls in Grand Marais. In winter months, there are cross-country ski trails. Fishing and hunting are also allowed in the Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore during the Dept. of Natural Resources designated hunting seasons. There is a backpacking trail that spans from Munising to Grand Marais - 42.8 miles long with designated campsites. There are 3 drive-in campgrounds, Beaver Basin, Twelve Mile Beach and Hurricane River.

The Forest offers 5 campgrounds: Bay Furnace, Wide Waters, Island Lake, AuTrain Lake and Pete's Lake. There are hiking and biking trails at Bruno's Run and Valley Spur. The Forest also has a large network of trails for ATV/ORV and snowmobiling. There are also many waterfalls. In the wilderness portion of the Forest, there are the Eben Ice Caves in winter and Rock River Falls hike in the spring, summer and fall.

The Grand Island Recreational Area is located just 1/2 mile from the mainland. Grand Island Ferry Service has an excellent summer schedule for those people wishing to see the island. The Altran Bus Service offers a 3-hr narrative tour of a portion of the island and tells of its history and terrain taking you to many points of interest. Trout Bay is an excellent place for a swim and picnic. Primitive camping is allowed on the island. Old logging roads are used for hiking and biking.

The Alger Underwater Preserve encompasses the entire Munising Bay. There are many sunken ships in the bay. It is a favorite for divers and a cruise boat ride is available to see the sunken ships that are in shallow waters.

For the ORV/ATV enthusiasts, all Alger County roads are open to the sport as well as the trail system in the Hiawatha Nat'l Forest.

Alger County restaurants dish up flavors of all kinds; the area's comfortable accommodations range from cozy small motels and larger lodging centers with pools and hot tubs to charming bed & breakfasts.  Camping area ranges from privately owned with pool or lakes providing electric and water to primitive sites.

The color season in the fall each year is not to be missed from the deep red to the golden yellow leaves as well as the golden tamarack trees.
