Surrounded on three sides by magnificent Lake Superior, Keweenaw County
mixes natural beauty, rich history and a multitude of activities that will make
your stay with us a most memorable experience. Old growth forests, waterfalls,
numerous inland lakes, and the spectacular beauty of the Lake Superior shoreline
provide some of the most diverse landscapes that nature has to offer. The
changing of the seasons brings an added dimension to each natural wonder and
making the Keweenaw a truly year-round vacationland.
Originally
settled by ancient tribes of Indians who came to the region to mine copper, you
can experience the area's rich history through a visit to Ft. Wilkins State
Park, an underground mine tour, lighthouses or spend some time in one of the
many old mining communities, such as Central. Dive one of the numerous
shipwrecks of the Keweenaw Underwater Preserve that surrounds the peninsula.
Summer in Keweenaw
County means mountain biking some of the most diverse and
challenging terrain in the Midwest, paddling the waters of Lake
Superior along the Keweenaw Water Trail or hiking the numerous
nature preserve and sanctuary trails. You can fish inland and "big
lake" waters and search for agates at many of the parks and
beaches. Take a sunset cruise or travel to Isle Royale Nat'l Park
for the day or for the week. Golf the challenging course at the
Keweenaw Mountain Lodge or pack a lunch and spend the day on a
white sandy beach at one of our county parks.
Fall
brings a variety of tours through a patchwork of brilliant reds,
oranges and yellows and the breathtaking vistas from Brockway
Mountain Drive. In winter you can travel through the pristine
white wilderness of the backwoods on miles of well-groomed
snowmobile and cross country ski trails. If you are truly
adventurous, you can ski some of the most challenging downhill
runs in the Midwest at Mt. Bohemia. Gushing waterfalls, the annual
hawk migration and fields of wildflowers herald the return of
spring.
Shop for gifts in the many unique shops, dine in a
variety of restaurant atmospheres offering fare from fresh lake
catches to pasties make daily, and then spend the night in one of
the numerous modern lodging facilities or at a campground in the
woods or on the water. Relax and explore the Keweenaw - Michigan's
northernmost county.
