Ontonagon County on the south shore of Lake Superior
includes the Porcupine
Mountains Wilderness State Park created in 1945. It has 60,000 acres of
virgin forest; Lake of the Clouds, one of the most scenic spots in all of
Michigan; and Summit Peak Observation Tower, one of the highest points in
Michigan. It offers an expansive view of thousands of acres of virgin forest and
on a clear day, over Lake Superior's vast expanse, one can see the far off
Apostle Islands to the west. There are miles of sandy beaches at Union Bay for
swimming and agate hunting. For history buffs, there are self-guided trails to
old mining sites on the Union Mine Scenic Trail, and the Nonesuch Mine location.
Visitors can enter the adit of the old Carp Lake Mine and hardy hikers can make
the trip to the historic Carp Lake Stamp mill site.
Ontonagon County has over 1,200 miles of streams and rivers.
Canoeing on the mighty Ontonagon River or viewing the many waterfalls
are a tourist's delight. Bond Falls has been the back drop for
national ad campaigns and is handicap accessible. Agate Falls is
also handicap accessible and is one of the highest in the midwest.
O-Kun-de-Cun Falls (named after the great Ojibway Chieftain in the
area) provides a great photographic opportunity with a suspension
bridge over the Baltimore River below the falls.
Lake Gogebic, the U.P's largest inland lake, is well known for its
walleye, bass and jumbo perch fishing. Springtime is the season for
Lake Superior angling where you can catch Lake trout and brown
trout, as well as coho salmon. Ontonagon County has an abundance
of inland lakes and ponds that allow for pan fishing and hundreds
of miles of streams provide challenging fly fishing opportunities
and many camping spots.
The Ontonagon Lighthouse (1866) is open for public tours. Historic
Rockland, site of the famous Minnesota Mine, has a fine museum and
nearby Old Victoria Restoration site, a mining camp brought back
to life, is open to public tours. Be sure to visit the highest
hydroelectric dam in the Midwest. The Victoria Hydro is on the
nearby West Branch of the Ontonagon
River.
There are many miles of open trails open to ATV's.
Hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails, a ski hill and
abundant snow provide the finest family fun in the midwest.

Mystery Light" and decide for yourself - is it real or imagined? -
