From Ironwood, Mi take US2 east to GCR 513 (Black River Scenic Byway) and turn left. Travel 15 miles to the Campground and Harbor. From Wakefield, Mi take US 2 west for 6 1/2 miles and turn right on GCR 513 (Black River Scenic Byway). Travel north on GCR 513 for 15 miles to the Campground and Harbor.

The campground is completely modern facility with flush toilets; sewer dumping station, pressure water system, and 40 paved camping spurs. The campsites can accommodate tents, trailers, and motor homes. Seven campsites provide an overlook to Lake Superior. Each campsite is bordered by vegetation providing privacy for a quite enjoyable experience.

There are several opportunitees for short hikes within the Black River Harbor Recreation Area.  You can take any of the five short (1/4 - 1/2 mile) trails to the waterfalls which are all accessible from paved parking lots.  Or if you prefer to make it more of a day you can access the North Country Trail at the trail head at Copper Peak and travel North along the Black River and view the waterfalls and continue into the Black River Harbor for a 6 mile hike.  If you desire more the NCT continues across our famous suspension bridge and 5.8 miles to the edge of Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park.

A hard-surface ramp with sufficient water depth and lake or impoundment size to accommodate all trailerable watercraft (minimum of 2.5 - 3 feet deep at a distance of 20 feet from shore). The site is signed.

Alligator Eye

The face of this rock looks like the alligator's eye, giving the hill its name. Part of the Ottawa National Forest. On M-64 about two miles south of Lake Gogebic State Park and about 6 miles north of U.S. 2. Look for a parking area, big enough for busses, on the road away from the lake. Handicap-accessible: no.

Located on the edge of an extensive upland area set in the heart of the Ottawa National Forest, Lake Gogebic State Park is an ideal point from which to explore the western Upper Peninsula. Many points of interest are within easy reach of the park. Bond Falls and Agate Falls are to the east, the beautiful falls and rapids of the Black River and Presque Isle River to the northeast, and the magnificent Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior to the north.

On the shores of Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains contain the Midwest's largest remaining stand of old growth timber. The park's points of interest are highlighted in a multi-media program at the visitor center. Enjoy breathtaking wilderness panoramas from overlooks at Lake of the Clouds and Summit Peak scenic sites. A 1/2 mile boardwalk on the Presque Isle River guides visitors to numerous waterfalls. Over 90 miles of hiking trails are available to the more adventuresome. Winter visitors enjoy Alpine and Nordic skiing.
