Sensational Summer | Upper Peninsula Michigan

Sand Castles on the Beach

Summer is the most popular time to visit the U.P. The weather is warm enough to enjoy the water, but not so unbearably hot that you hide in air-conditioned rooms. This is a season filled with family memories — destination weddings, anniversary celebrations and family reunions.

The U.P. is the one place on earth you have access to Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior — for hours of fresh-water swimming, boating, fishing, shipwreck hunting and sun soaking. Comb the sandy beaches for semi-precious agates. Write or paint in an artist-in-residence cabin. Or choose to play, fish or float in hundreds of inland lakes.

Summer is also for exploring lovingly preserved historic sites and islands, hiking or biking miles of scenic trails, cliff jumping off Black Rocks, golfing, going to music festivals, boutique shopping and gallery hopping or telling spine-chilling stories around beach bonfires. At day’s end, plan to stop everything to watch the sun set in blazing glory.
