Twilight Tours at Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Outdoor
09:00 PM
Location: Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Seney
Join us for our annual Twilight Tours on Thursdays May 31 and June 7, 2018. Use your ears, not just your eyes, on these special nighttime tours of Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is closed from dusk to dawn, so this tour is a rare opportunity to experience the refuge in the twilight and early evening hours when many animals are active. We will be searching for secretive marshbirds like the yellow rail, Virginia rail and sora. This is also an excellent chance to hear spring peepers, gray treefrogs, green frogs, and American toads. During this tour, it is unlikely that we will see these animals but chances are very good we will hear some of their calls. The tour involves several stops where we will get out of the bus, stand and listen for any types of wildlife that may be calling. Tours will start at 9:00 p.m. and end around 12 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Center, which will reopen at 8:30 p.m., and come prepared to do battle with mosquitoes and black flies. Head nets, pants, long sleeves, and closed shoes are recommended. Dress in layers as some nights can be quite chilly. We will go even if there is a light rain, so plan accordingly. Here are some highlights from past tours. We have heard sora, Virginia rails, spring peepers, gray tree frogs, American toads, American woodcock, Wilson's snipe, and green frogs. Saw starry nights, fireflies, trumpeter swans, common loons, sandhill cranes, ring-necked ducks, and other species. The refuge truly is different at night.

Heading North along the brand new non-motorized pathway, the route winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline to VanCleve Park, where 10K runners will turn around to return back to the Terrace Bay Hotel along the waterfront trail and Half Marathon runners will continue on. Passing through VanCleve Park, runners will experience scenic views of Lake Michigan along a scenic boardwalk, through the Northern portion of Gladstone, eventually returning along the non-motorized pathway back to the Finish at the Terrace Bay Hotel.

Grand Island Trail Marathon & Half Marathon

Annual Events
07:00 AM
Location: Grand Island National Recreation Area
The course follows the perimeter trail of the island counterclockwise up past Murray Bay and Duck Lake. At three miles the course heads eastward into the Tombolo, up into the island's thumb and then back along Trout Bay where runners can enjoy one of the most spectacular stretches of shoreline anywhere in the Great Lakes. Runners then ascend up the eastern cliffs of the island which treat runners to views of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The northern half of the island features 300ft colored Jacobsville sandstone cliffs and the remote and exquisitely beautiful North Beach. The return trail on the island’s western shore features remarkable vistas of Lake Superior. Much of the trail is shaded by lush hardwood forests. Exposed sections (atop cliffs) blanket runners with cool breezes off of Lake Superior. Trail includes single track, two track, and narrow dirt roads.
