Marquette Regional History Center Special Exhibit: Logging Marks

Logging was a large and powerful industry that shaped the landscape of our backyards and forests. Michigan law required logs to be marked on both ends to reduce the theft of timber. Rod Smith, education coordinator with the Michigan DNR, collected many of these log marks. Study these logs from around the Upper Peninsula and learn about the logging companies they represent. UP 200, Midnight Run & Jack Pine 30

The UP200 is one of America's premier 12-dog, mid-distance sled dog races and draws mushers from around the United States and Canada. The UP200 is an Iditarod qualifying race. Coinciding with the UP200 is the eight-dog Midnight Run, a race from Marquette to Chatham. The Midnight Run, or MNR, draws premier teams wanting to test their skill on a technically challenging trail. The JackPine 30 rounds out the weekend’s fun with a six-dog, 30-mile sprint from Gwinn, Michigan to Marquette.

18th Annual Becoming an Outdoors Woman Winter Program

Location: Bay Cliff Health Camp, Big Bay
The BOW program is sponsored by the DNR and offers instruction in more than a dozen different types of indoor and outdoor activities, including cross-country skiing, archery, winter shelter building, ice fishing, photography, wilderness first aid, wood burning, snowshoe and more. Instructors provide basic and advanced teaching that is tailored to each participant's individual ability. Special evening programs also are offered during the weekend. BOW participants stay and take classes at the Bay Cliff Health Camp, a universally accessible facility overlooking Lake Superior, which is situated about 30 miles north of Marquette near Big Bay. Participants will be housed in a dorm-style facility with amenities, including a sauna and hiking trails with access to northern hardwood forests and Lake Superior. The $195 registration fee includes all food and lodging as well as most equipment and supplies, except as noted in the registration materials. Scholarships also are available on a limited basis.

An afternoon of winter fun in the wilds of Big Bay, Michigan. Enjoy hot cider and treats and get your picture taken with the sweet and wild Honey Bear. Explore our groomed wilderness on skis or snowshoes and for the more adventurous, trek up to Ridgeline for fantastic views. This is a non race event but we will have timers on hand if you are up for the 12K Challenge. Special prizes for skiers wearing a “honey bear” or Big Bay item of clothing. Funds help maintain over 20 miles of trails.

A happy hour ski tour of the Forestville ski trails. This family-friendly event is for all ski abilities and ages, and costumes are encouraged (maybe even a little bit required). The skiing portion of the event will take place on the groomed and scenic terrain on the NTN Forestville ski trails. On a quest to find stories with which to entertain his young cohorts in Neverland -- an island refuge for “Lost Boys” -- Peter returns to the real world and meets Wendy, Michael, and John Darling. The Darling children accompany Peter back to the magical Neverland, where they learn to fly, get involved in all sorts of adventures, defeat the evil Captain Hook, and are changed forever.

The twists and turns from the past, present, and five months later leave Karen and Gabe as well as the audience questioning their own situation.
