Marquette Regional History Center “The Origins of Wildlife Photography.

Recreation
10:00 AM To 05:00 PM
Location: Marquette Regional History Center, Marquette
John H. Hammer and George Shiras 3rd invented the equipment and methods for day and nighttime photography of wildlife. The display includes equipment, prototypes and original patents. John H. Hammer, inventor of the flash attachments for night time photography, was born in Cristiana, Norway in 1859. He emigrated from Oslo, Norway in 1881 after working in an optical factory. In the U.S, he settled in Detroit where he met his future wife, Jenny Grundholm. They moved to Marquette around 1885 where he was employed in an engine works. There he gained valuable experience in fabrication and logistics. Shiras and Hammer developed methods for animals to take their own picture: larger animals by trip wire, smaller animals by using a baited wire. They took photos of animals at night and added a second camera to get the animals’ reaction to the flash. Hammer held two patents in the U.S. as well as patents in Canada, France, England and Germany.
