Michigan Nature Association - Frog Walk Field Trip

Join Amy Schrank from MTU’s School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science for an aquatic biology field trip suitable for all ages. Meet at 7:30pm at the large MDOT parking area, across from Great Sand Bay. We’ll take a beach hike and then return to enjoy a picnic supper. Amy will lead a discussion on frog biology and ecology and then, at dusk, we’ll head down the trail a little over ½ of a mile to a pond and wetlands to listen for frogs and toads. Bring your own picnic supper, snacks, water, flashlights and headlamps, bug repellant, sunscreen, and wear footwear suitable for getting wet. Getting There: Follow M-26 about 3.5 miles north of Eagle River or 4.5 miles south of Eagle Harbor. Look for the large MNA Event sign on the east side of M-26 along Great Sand Bay. Parking is in the MDOT parking lot.

Longest Day Fishing Tournament

The Longest Day Fishing Tournament is held on the waters of Copper Harbor, Lac La Belle, Eagle Harbor and Lake Medora (All 4 locations have DNR Parks and Recreation Division facilities). No boat is permitted more than 5 miles from the Lake Superior Shoreline. Fishing tentatively begins at 6:00 am, and ends at 3:30 pm. The awards ceremony will be held at 8:00 pm at the Mariner North in Copper Harbor. Check in and weighing of fish will be done at the Gaslite General Store. A pre-tournament meeting will be held on Friday at the Copper Harbor Community Building and will include refreshments, live music and a fish boil.

PFD's must be worn at all times. No pre-registration necessary for Kayaking 101. Kayaking 202 will be limited to 10 participants. Join geologist Erika Vye for a geology, history and nature walk at the majestic Estivant Pines. Explore how old-growth forests play a special role in promoting the overall health of our environment and learn about the fascinating geology that lies below these 300 - 500 year old giants. We'll also learn about the history of copper mining in the area and how and why one of the oldest old-growth white pine stands in Michigan was spared from logging. Getting There: Follow US 41 north through Copper Harbor, turn right on 2nd Street at the Community Center and sign for Manganese Lake. Follow 2nd Street (also called Manganese Road) for 1.2 miles, bearing left onto Clark Mine Road. Travel 1.2 miles and turn right on Burma Road. Travel another .65 miles to the trailhead and parking area and the large MNA Event sign.

40th Annual Canal Run

The Canal Run is held along the Portage Lake Shipping Canal Waterway on Highway M-203 in Hancock, MI. There are many options for racers including a 1/2 marathon, 10 mile run., 5 mile run, 10 mile walk, and 5 mile walk. All events finish in front of the FirstMerit Bank in downtown Hancock. The race course is on a paved road surface and the road is not closed to traffic. All timing done by Superior Timing.

26th Annual North Country 100 Bike Race

Location: Sunday Lake, Wakefield
Riders will travel over rolling terrain, past lakes and forests and enjoy the wildflowers and scenery of the Upper Peninsula. Routes for the 100 mile and 100 kilometer are designed with more experienced riders in mind. The 25 mile route follows a moderate terrain. All three tours are open to any rider aged 12 and older, so riders should keep in mind their own limits. Check Point/Aid stations will be provided along the route, upon return a meal will be available. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All riders are required to have helmets.





100 Mile Tour - Must be registered before July 13, 2013 and a minimum of 10 riders required to hold the 100 Mile Tour.

Yes, that means YOU! Ladies of all skill levels will be there. The Copper Harbor Ladies Weekend is for anyone that has a desire to improve their riding skills. We are here to offer a supportive learning environment for all skill levels. Beginner, intermediate and advanced skills will be taught and participants will be broken into groups depending on skill level. Under 18 must have a parent/guardian also participating in the camp. Registration will open on March 1st with a reduced event cap of 65. THE EVENT FILLS QUICKLY We will also maintain a waiting list for those that don't make it in under the cap. Fee for the weekend of events is $225. CHTC-IMBA members receive a 10% discount with coupon code. Your fee includes professional coaching at all skill sessions and lessons, educational clinics, shuttle service with event sponsor the Copper Harbor Adventure Company on Sunday, evening socials Friday and Saturday evening, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and giveaways. Join Conservation Biologist and expert Lepidopterist, Jim Bess, for an enjoyable hike and a lesson in the identification of butterflies. You’ll want to have binoculars and cameras to help “capture” specimens. Bring along water, a picnic lunch, and the usual necessities for a summer hike. Getting there: From US-41 on the north end of Calumet, turn west onto M-203, and travel about 1.25 miles to Tamarack Waterworks Road and turn right. Travel 2.5 miles on Tamarack Waterworks Road to Sedar Bay Road and turn right again. Follow Sedar Bay Road approximately 2.5 miles until reaching the Black Creek trailhead sign and parking area on the right, about 0.2 miles from the end of the public road. Enjoy a hike to Bare Bluff, an extraordinary lookout point over Lake Superior. Along the way, we’ll monitor the spread of knapweed along the exposed bluffs and remove what we find. Besides snacks and water, bug repellent and sunscreen, and good hiking boots and hat, please bring along work gloves and an asparagus cutter or weeding tool if you have one. (We will have extras available.) From the top, we’ll enjoy a vigorous hike down the steep return trail. Getting there: Drive north on US 41 to eleven miles south of Copper Harbor. Turn right at the sign for Lac La Belle and Mt. Bohemia. Drive about 5 miles to Lac La Belle, turn left on the Bete Gris Road and drive about 2 miles to the Smith Fisheries Road and turn left. Bear right and travel another 2.5 miles to the parking area on the right. Look for the large MNA Event sign.

9th Annual Great Deer Chase Mountain Bike Race

The 9th Annual Great Deer Chase mountain bike race will be held on August 16 at the Swedetown Trail system off Swedetown Road in Calumet. The event, held in conjunction with Calumet's Heritage Days, will feature 15 and 28 mile cross country races as well as 3 and 4.25 mile youth races. There will also be a 40-yard Fawn Chase untimed youth race.


Races start at 10 am (Eastern) at the Calumet Colosseum. An awards ceremony will be held at 4 pm. Registration forms will be available online and registration will be open at Cross Country Sports in downtown Calumet.
