Bessemer Blast celebrates this year’s 4th of July from June 27th right through July 4th.
The excitement is in the air, and there is guaranteed to be something for every age, which culminates with “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks on July 4th starting at 10 pm.
You will meet up with old friends and are sure to make new ones. You will have to sleep hard and fast, as you will not want to miss any of the events that will be celebrating these days.
The 50/50 sellers will be everywhere, surpassing last year’s prize of $25,987!

The Canal Run was started in 1975, and is the premier running event in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Following the rolling hills along the Portage Lake Shipping Canal, the Canal Run offers three distances for runners and walkers of all levels, including a half marathon, 10-mile run, 10-mile walk, 5-mile run and 5-mile walk.

26th Annual North Country 100 Bike Race

Location: Sunday Lake, Wakefield
Riders will travel over rolling terrain, past lakes and forests and enjoy the wildflowers and scenery of the Upper Peninsula. Routes for the 100 mile and 100 kilometer are designed with more experienced riders in mind. The 25 mile route follows a moderate terrain. All three tours are open to any rider aged 12 and older, so riders should keep in mind their own limits. Check Point/Aid stations will be provided along the route, upon return a meal will be available. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All riders are required to have helmets.





100 Mile Tour - Must be registered before July 13, 2013 and a minimum of 10 riders required to hold the 100 Mile Tour.

Adventures in History: The Estivant Pines - Preserving & Interpreting the Keweenaw

Charles Eshbach, Historian, Naturalist, Guide and Author In the late 1960's a movement began to save the Estivant Pines, one of the last old-growth stands of white pine, located near Copper Harbor. Charles Eshbach will provide the morning talk about the Pines, why they are important, and how they were preserved. An optional walking tour of the Pines will be held from 1-3 PM. Fort Wilkins Historic State Park - 30th Anniversary Battery D Civil War Encampment

History comes alive at Fort Wilkins. Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, a Civil War era living history group returns to Fort Wilkins for its 31st annual weekend encampment. The weekend event will be open to park visitors from 8 AM to 8 PM on Friday and Saturday and 8 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. Battery D will interpret army life of the period, demonstrating artillery and small arms drills, period cooking and soldiers’ pastimes. A Michigan State or Out of State Recreation Passport is required for entry into the park.

Located at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Fort Wilkins State Park is a perfect place for stargazing. During our celebration of the Perseid Meteor shower enjoy that sticky gooey campfire favorite in the day use area by the Fort Parking Lot. Then at 10 p.m., after cleaning up from our gooey treat, join Joel Kimball, Professor at Gannon University, on the Parade Grounds to view stars, planets, galaxies and more via high powered telescopes. The Perseid Meteor shower can be viewed between August 8-15. It is best viewed early in the morning but can be seen anytime after dusk. In the chance of rain this program will occur on August 9.

Learn the basics of kayaking and try out kayaking on the Keweenaw Bay! There will a Kayaking 101 program for beginner level and a Kayaking 202 program for those looking for an intermediate session. Intermediate paddlers will feature a wetlands program in the sloughs near the park! Kayaks and life jackets will be provided by Keweenaw Bay. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Personal floatation devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times. No pre-registration is necessary for Kayaking 101. Kayaking 202 will be limited to 10 participants. Quincy Smelter Tour

$5/person, children under 10 free, AAA discount. The Quincy Smelter Association hosts tours monthly so visitors such as yourself can see the only intact copper smelter from the American Industrial Revolution around the turn of the 20th Century. See much of the original machinery used to turn ore into copper ingots. Not only can you see the original equipment from the smelter's construction in 1898. But our guides will point out the major changes in the Great Expansion of 1920. We look forward to showing this and much more. Since much of the tour is spent in the buildings, this is a great event even on rainy days. Directions: Turn right after crossing the bridge on to M-26, go 1/4 mile to the sign on the right. The smelter is a former industrial site. We recommend wearing closed shoes for your safety.

Come to Fort Wilkins for our 10th Annual Geocaching Event! Registration is available from 8-10 a.m. The event concludes with a get together and an awards drawing at 2 p.m. Geocaching is a treasure hunt using GPS units (not provided) to find hidden treasure in and around the fort as well as interesting, beautiful or historical locations in the nearby area. A Michigan State Parks Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Fort Wilkins Historic State Park.

Join us for a 5k Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. This is a great event for the entire family! Participants will meet at the front lobby of UP Health System - Portage in Hancock to register. Walkers and runners will head out on Portage Dr, then east onto Ingot to connect with the Hancock/Calumet trail. Participants will continue on the trail until Tomasi Rd where they will loop around to finish at the hospital. Snacks and refreshments will be served in the hospital lobby following the Turkey Trot.
