1913 Miners' Strike Centennial

The nearly year-long strike by members of the Western Federation of Miners in 1913-14 is one of the most significant events in Copper Country history and also figures critically in national labor struggles of the era. A year long series of events throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula will commemorate the Michigan Copper Miners' Strike 1913-1914 Centennial.

Superior Wind Symphony: Musical Offerings at Rozsa Center

9th Annual Gun, Knife & Sports Show

This is our 9th annual gun and knife and sports show. This is Friday from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9-5 p.m. We are a well known family business located downtown Hancock. Some of our products include fishing and live bait, archery and accessories, hunting clothes and supplies including firearms. We also manufacture the original Bob Maki snowshoe binding right at our business. For our annualshow we will have 60 to 80 tables and with $5.00 admission we are donating a percent to the sportsman's clubs locally in Houghton and Keweenaw counties for their deer feed. Our attendance varies from year to year, but this a new location and we are projecting 500 to 700 visitors at our show.

Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival

The annual Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival Mountain Bike race includes 16- and 32-mile point-to-point cross-country distance races and the Junior Chain Drive youth races. All participants for the 16- and 32-mile races receive a free jersey. The cross-country races traverse the Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids trail system in Hancock and include miles of singletrack and lots of elevation change. The Junior Chain Drive starts and ends at the Portage Health campus, using a single-track trail in a wooded area east of the hospital.

Longest Day Fishing Tournament

The Longest Fishing Tournament is held on the waters of Lac La Belle, Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor and Lake Medora. No boat is permitted more than 5 miles from the Lake Superior Shoreline. Tournament tentatively begins at 6 am on Saturday, June 15, and ends at 3:30 pm with the Awards Ceremony at 8 pm at the Mariner North in Copper Harbor. Check in and weighing of fish will be done at the Gaslite General Store. A pre-tournament meeting will be held on Friday at the Copper Harbor Community Building and will include refreshments, live music and a fish boil.

25th Annual North Country 100 Bike Race

Location: Sunday Lake, Wakefield

Riders will travel over rolling terrain, past lakes and forests and enjoy the wildflowers and scenery of the Upper Peninsula. Routes for the 100 mile and 100 kilometer are designed with more experienced riders in mind. The 25 mile route follows a moderate terrain. All three tours are open to any rider aged 12 and older, so riders should keep in mind their own limits. Check Point/Aid stations will be provided along the route, upon return a meal will be available. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All riders are required to have helmets.
100 Mile Tour - Must be registered before July 13, 2013 and a minimum of 10 riders required to hold the 100 Mile Tour.
All riders start together, there are no late or early starts. See Registration/Entry Form for more details.

Fort Wilkins State Park - Battery D Civil War Encampment

Location: Fort Wilkins, Copper Harbor
March to a different drum as you discover part of Michigan's Civil War heritage. Battery D, First Michigan Light Artillery, recreates army life of the period with artillery and small arms drills, cooking, soldiers' pastimes and much more! The encampment features more than 25 costumed interpreters, tents and full-scale artillery pieces, as well as authentically reproduced mess gear, small arms and other period artifacts. Throughout the weekend, visitors can also take in skits that offer a look at a Civil War-era army field hospital and other aspects of military life.

Looking for some health tips to stay in shape as the summer season comes to a close? Join Baraga State Park and Baraga County Memorial Hospital as they host their 'MI Big Green Gym' event! Being health-conscious can start anywhere; learn about health, nutrition and fitness right in a state park! This event is open for families and youth - Kindergarten through 6th and family participation is encouraged. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is requested to help plan for the number of lunches to serve, please call 906-524-3322 to do so. Pre-registered participants will get a free lunch. Each child will receive a portion plate from BCMH. Please call to cancel reservations at least 48 hours prior to event. Stay tuned for this year's schedule of events! Meet at Baraga State Park's campground, north end (sites 72-74 and 1A-11K). 9th Annual Great Deer Chase Mountain Bike Race

The 9th Annual Great Deer Chase mountain bike race will be held on August 16 at the Swedetown Trail system off Swedetown Road in Calumet. The event, held in conjunction with Calumet's Heritage Days, will feature 15 and 28 mile cross country races as well as 3 and 4.25 mile youth races. There will also be a 40-yard Fawn Chase untimed youth race.
Races start at 10 am (Eastern) at the Calumet Colosseum. An awards ceremony will be held at 4 pm. Registration forms will be available online and registration will be open at Cross Country Sports in downtown Calumet.
