Miner's Revenge Mountain Bike Race

Annual Events
Location: Adventure Mine, Greenland
An incredible 7000 years ago the first humans arrived in the Keweenaw to extract pure copper from the earth, hammering and chiseling at the rock to break the metal free from its grasp. As time evolved the methods for removing the copper became more advanced, eventually leading to drilling holes and blasting the copper out with TNT. Men worked 10 hour shifts 6 days a week carving the metal from the mountain and in 1920 after 70 years of underground mining they abandoned the remaining copper and left the tunnels vacant of their toils. The Miners Revenge takes you deep into the mountain and through the pits of ancient miners who spent their lives chasing the red metal. Some say the men who died still live in the mine protecting their claim, we can’t say that’s true but we can say that anything can happen when you are 300 feet below the surface and there’s nobody to hear you scream. Miners Revenge, they were chasing a dream of riches in the form of silver and copper, you are being chased, and we have just one question, who's afraid of the dark?

Quincy Smelter Tour

Shows & Events
11:00 AM To 03:00 PM
Location: Hancock
$5/person, children under 10 free, AAA discount. The Quincy Smelter Association hosts tours monthly so visitors such as yourself can see the only intact copper smelter from the American Industrial Revolution around the turn of the 20th Century. See much of the original machinery used to turn ore into copper ingots. Not only can you see the original equipment from the smelter's construction in 1898. But our guides will point out the major changes in the Great Expansion of 1920. We look forward to showing this and much more. Since much of the tour is spent in the buildings, this is a great event even on rainy days. Directions: Turn right after crossing the bridge on to M-26, go 1/4 mile to the sign on the right. The smelter is a former industrial site. We recommend wearing closed shoes for your safety.

Porcupine Mountains Trail Marathon

The Porcupine Mountains are one of the largest tracts of wilderness east of the Mississippi River. The Porcupine Mts overlook Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake on Earth. The coastline is remote and rugged. The marathon course includes some of the most remarkable single track in the midwest and takes runners past tranquil and remote Mirror Lake and along the classic Escarpment Trail where you can almost reach out and touch soaring hawks as you overlook Lake of the Clouds. This event completes a trio of deeply inspiring trail marathon hosted by Great Lakes Endurance (Waugoshance, Grand Island, and Porcupine Mtns) offering runners the best of what Michigan and the Upper Great Lakes have to offer.

Aquila Theatre presents: Romeo & Juliet at Rozsa Center

Arts &Theater
08:00 PM
Location: Rosza Center, Houghton
Recognized world-wise as one of theater's most iconic couples, Romeo & Juliet are the very archetype of tragic young lovers. Set against the backdrop of warring households, as young Romeo sneaks into a masked ball where he first beholds Juliet and in thunderstruck by Cupid's arrow. As fate dictates, they succumb to the passion of forbidden love against the will of their powerful and unforgiving families. So ensues a story of romance, murder and tragedy as famous as any that has graced the stage. Through Shakespeare's beautiful prose, these star crossed lovers, in Aquila Theatre's striking and moving adaption of the Bard's classic tragedy, will take your breath away. Aquila Theatre will bring its innovative style and dynamic physical approach to Shakespeare's most famous and heart-breaking play. The New Yorker has raved that Aquila Theatre's productions are "Beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect."
