Michigan Nature Association - Spotted Knapweed Pull

Join steward Nancy Leonard in the ongoing task of removing the invasive Spotted Knapweed from the conglomerate shoreline in this Class C plant preserve. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic (bring your own) at a nearby roadside park. Bring along bug repellent, sunscreen, work gloves, hat, sturdy footwear and an asparagus cutter if you have one. Additional tools, drinking water and snacks will be supplied. Please RSVP if possible so we can determine how many tools we’ll need. Fort Wilkins State Park - Battery D Civil War Encampment

March to a different drum as you discover part of Michigan's Civil War heritage. Battery D, First Michigan Light Artillery, recreates army life of the period with artillery and small arms drills, cooking, soldiers' pastimes and much more! The encampment features more than 25 costumed interpreters, tents and full-scale artillery pieces, as well as authentically reproduced mess gear, small arms and other period artifacts. Throughout the weekend, visitors can also take in skits that offer a look at a Civil War-era army field hospital and other aspects of military life.

Join Erika Vye, MTU Geology PhD student, for a hike leading up to the high bluffs for a spectacular view of Lake Superior. Along the way, we’ll learn about the soaring rhyolite outcrop and the fascinating Keweenaw Fault. Pack a lunch and water, bring bug repellent and sunscreen, and wear sturdy hiking boots. To get there, drive north on US 41 to eleven miles south of Copper Harbor. Turn right at the sign for Lac La Belle and Mt. Bohemia. Drive about 5 miles to Lac La Belle, turn left on the Bete Gris Road and drive about 2 miles to the Smith Fisheries Road and turn left. Bear right and travel another 2.5 miles to the parking area on the right, marked with an MNA sign.

Looking for some health tips to stay in shape as the summer season comes to a close? Join Baraga State Park and Baraga County Memorial Hospital as they host their 'MI Big Green Gym' event! Being health-conscious can start anywhere; learn about health, nutrition and fitness right in a state park! This event is open for families and youth - Kindergarten through 6th and family participation is encouraged. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. 9th Annual Great Deer Chase Mountain Bike Race

The 9th Annual Great Deer Chase mountain bike race will be held on August 16 at the Swedetown Trail system off Swedetown Road in Calumet. The event, held in conjunction with Calumet's Heritage Days, will feature 15 and 28 mile cross country races as well as 3 and 4.25 mile youth races. There will also be a 40-yard Fawn Chase untimed youth race.
Races start at 10 am (Eastern) at the Calumet Colosseum. An awards ceremony will be held at 4 pm. Registration forms will be available online and registration will be open at Cross Country Sports in downtown Calumet.

35th Annual Portage Health Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon/Junior Bear Chase

26k and 50k classic and free style cross country ski races, the Junior Bear Chase, the 14k freestyle race and the Bear Chase snow bike race start and finish near downtown Calumet. The 25k snow bike race will be the Midwest Snow Bike Championship.

Friday night the Swedetown Trails are going to the next generation as the Copper Country Ski Tigers host the annual Junior Bear Chase. Registration/Bib Pick-Up is from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and kids under 16 can compete in races from 4 km to 1 km. It’s $7 to participant with funds going to the Ski Tigers.
