Fort Wilkins Historic State Park - 30th Anniversary Battery D Civil War Encampment

Location: Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, Copper Harbor
History comes alive at Fort Wilkins. Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, a Civil War era living history group returns to Fort Wilkins for its 31st annual weekend encampment. The weekend event will be open to park visitors from 8 AM to 8 PM on Friday and Saturday and 8 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. Battery D will interpret army life of the period, demonstrating artillery and small arms drills, period cooking and soldiers’ pastimes. A Michigan State or Out of State Recreation Passport is required for entry into the park.

117th Annual Ishpeming Italian Fest

Italian Fest is a day-long family event. There is free entertainment (live bands, music), pony rides and games for children. There are also "games of chance" and Bingo as well as a "greased pole" event and food vendors. The highlight is Diamonte, an Italian/American group of performers out of Chicago. Their performance is at the end of the day and has been a favorite part of many of the attendees for the last several years.

Rendezvous in the Sault

Rendezvous in the Sault is a living history event that will take place along Historic Water Street at the City Hall Grounds and at the Historic Homes. Local and visiting historical re-enactors will set up camps and displays with presentations and demonstrations on military and civilian life in the period of 1668-1840. Food, music, dancing, cannon firing, storytelling, crafts and games will be just some of the fun things to see and do on Saturday and Sunday of the last full weekend of July.

Baraga State Park - Rec 101 & 202: Intro to Kayaking

Learn the basics of kayaking and try out kayaking on the Keweenaw Bay! There will a Kayaking 101 program for beginner level and a Kayaking 202 program for those looking for an intermediate session. Intermediate paddlers will feature a wetlands program in the sloughs near the park! Kayaks and life jackets will be provided by Keweenaw Bay. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Personal floatation devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times. No pre-registration is necessary for Kayaking 101. Kayaking 202 will be limited to 10 participants. Friends of Indian Lake State Park Annual Fishing Tournament

Rules And Regulations 1. There will be a $10 entry fee for the adult division. No entry fee for youth 14 yrs. & under. Youth 15 & 16 yrs. old must compete in the adult division. All Adults 17 yrs. or older must have a current Michigan fishing license except youth under 17 yrs. All participants must observe all Michigan fishing rules & regulations. (NO EXCEPTIONS) 2. There will be 4 categories for adults & youth: (Walleye – Bass – Northern Pike - Panfish). All fish registered will be judge by total length. Undersized fish will be disqualified. All fish must be checked in by 5:15 p.m. No fish will be judged after 5:15. 3. Registration will begin on August 12 at the camp host site with final registration at 8 a.m. on August 13 at the tournament headquarters located at the boat launch. There will be a short meeting at 7:45 a.m. prior to start time along with all boats no matter where they have been launched will be inspected. Any participants who leave with their boat must notify the tournament officials. If returning to re-enter the tournament, re-inspection of boat will be required. Trophies will be awarded to the first place winners in each category, along with prizes for 2nd- 3rd place winners. Each adult will be given a free ticket for a chance at a number of raffle prizes that will be available. There will be a special raffle for the youth division. Each participating youth will receive a free ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased prior to the raffle drawing for the adult raffle. Awarding of Prizes will be at 5:30 p.m. Free coffee will be available all day, provided by the campground host and members of the Friends of Indian Lake and Palms Book State Parks. The course is mostly single-track climbing the 4 peaks: Sugarloaf, Top-of-the World, Bareback, and Hogsback outcrops. All the peaks have views of Lake Superior and some of the trail runs along the lake. Most of the trail is easy to moderate running with a few significant climbs and technical areas.
Also new this year is the Ultramarathon Relay - form a team and run the trails Friday before the solo event on Saturday, more details on our website.

Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow

A Rendezvous at the Straits French Voyager Reenactment and Powwow, a family event celebrating the history of the St. Ignace area, will take place Saturday, August 22, through Sunday, August 23, 2014, at the Father Marquette National Memorial, just off US-2 west of I-75 in St. Ignace. Admission is $4.00 for elders, children 5 and under are free, and $5.00 for everyone else. This is really two events in one -- part French voyager re-enactment and part traditional Powwow. Visit the French encampments, watch demonstrations, visit vendors displaying authentic wares, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Native dancing and drumming ceremonies. From its humble beginnings in 1975, our annual Labor Day show has grown into one of the best events in the region. Exhibitors come from near and far, bringing an ever-changing display of tractors, gas engines and vintage farm equipment. The Heritage Village provides a charming old-fashioned backdrop for a variety of traditional handicrafts from local artisans. Be sure to see our working sawmill and stop by the Agricultural Museum to browse an eclectic collection of antiques and artifacts. There is also a large flea market, as well as a knife and gun expo. And if you’re hungry, there is plenty of good food on the grounds. While we hope that you enjoy our show, our purpose is not simply to entertain you. As part of our efforts to preserve our past heritage, we strive to educate current generations about the machinery our forefathers used.

59th Annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk

Join thousands of walkers and make the five-mile trek across the Mighty Mackinac Bridge! This annual trek occurs on Labor Day, the only day of the year pedestrians are allowed on the bridge. Walkers begin in St. Ignace at the north end of the Bridge and walk south. The walk is one-way, and bus transportation is available to return you to St. Ignace until 2:30 p.m. The walk begins at 7:00 a.m. No one will be permitted to start walking after 11:00 a.m.





To alleviate some of the parking congestion at the Bridge View Park area, the Mackinac Bridge Authority, in cooperation with the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce, is providing FREE shuttle service from Little Bear East Arena, 275 Marquette Street in St. Ignace, to the bridge walk start line. Shuttles will make continuous circuits from Little Bear East Arena to the Bridge View Park and back between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. For more information visit www.stignace.com

The first 100 registered cars received a goodie bag full of great items and a great gift supplied by the local merchants and automotive suppliers. Tahquamenon Wilderness Canoe Race

The GREAT RACE from the Lower Falls to Lake Superior; Start the morning with this 17 1/2 mile, two-person professional canoe race as the paddlers brave the waters of the Tahquamenon River from the Lower Tahquamenon Falls to Lake Superior. A shorter (6 1/2 mile) one-person race begins at 3:30 at the mouth of the Tahquamenon River. A fun run for amateur paddlers is also offered. MCRA members conclude the event with a banquet and awards program.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore announces Au Sable Day, Saturday, September 17, 11 am - 4 pm. The day includes free disabled accessible bus shuttle service to the lighthouse from the lower Hurricane River Campground, tours of the light station and fog signal building, and refreshments.
Visitors riding the free ALTRAN shuttle bus should board at the Hurricane River bridge or lower campground parking lots. Hurricane River Campground is 12 miles west of Grand Marais, MI on Alger County H-58.
The Au Sable Light Station was constructed in 1874, and has shone its light to guide mariners for over 138 years.
Au Sable Day also celebrates Public Lands Day, an annual appreciation of federal lands open to all for a variety of recreation, renewal, and education. Join us for a beautiful fall color day looking out over Lake Superior!
