Soo Locks Engineers Weekend 2016

Location: Soo Locks, Cloverland Electric Hydroelectric Plant, and City Hall Sault Ste. Marie, MI
Three events in one day! Get up close and personal with Lake Freighters this Engineers Day. Visitors are able to walk out across the walls of the Soo Locks and explore the historic buildings 9am-3pm free admission. Cloverland Electric Cooperative will host its annual hydroelectric plant open house 9am to 4pm free admission. The Sault Arts, Crafts and Family Fun Fair will sprawl across the City Hall lawn overlooking historic Water Street and the St. Mary’s River 10am-5pm.

Manistique Independence Day Celebration

Fireworks at dusk. Please do not park on US2. The Manistique 4th of July Parade starts at 12:30pm from Chippewa and Deer Streets. It travels over the Siphon Bridge and continues down Cedar Street toward US-2, through downtown. Bring a chair and enjoy our annual Fourth of July Parade! There is plenty of parking behind the downtown stores. Come early and enjoy breakfast downtown! Don't forget to have your children bring a bag, as lots of candy is given out during the parade! Music and Arts and Craft Show----Immediately after the parade browse the arts and craft show at the marina, at the end of Cedar Street and US-2. Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce 27th Annual Folkfest 2016 is a celebration of life that takes place the 2nd Saturday in July on the main street of Manistique. Art & Craft Booths display their diverse wares over two blocks while the aromas of Multicultural Food Booths tempt the participants down the street. The central stage provides ethnic music & entertainment with the Beer Garden close by. The Children have their own street, which supplies the young with extra fun. Folkfest is truly an event for everyone. Friday night Pet Parade(5:30pm), then Street Dance, Beer Garden, some food vendors until 12:30 am. Saturday starts at 10am opening ceremony, then all day into the evening until 12:30 a.m. Great Fun!

91st Annual Bell's Beer Bayview to Mackinac Race

Since the first Mackinac Race in 1925, Bayview Yacht Club has hosted this spectacular annual fresh water event which has attracted intrepid sailors from around the globe. The first fleet of only nine boats was battered by strong winds and only three finished. Today, Bayview hosts more than two hundred fifty racing yachts for the annual trek from Port Huron to Mackinac Island. Whether sailing the traditional shore course or the longer Cove Island or South Hampton course, it is an exciting and challenging adventure and sailors must face every conceivable type of challenge mother nature can present. From big waves and high wind to black flies and intolerable heat, the sailors press on to finish yet another Mackinac Race.

Grand Island Trail Marathon & Half Marathon

The course follows the perimeter trail of the island counterclockwise up past Murray Bay and Duck Lake. At three miles the course heads eastward into the Tombolo, up into the island's thumb and then back along Trout Bay where runners can enjoy one of the most spectacular stretches of shoreline anywhere in the Great Lakes. Runners then ascend up the eastern cliffs of the island which treat runners to views of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The northern half of the island features 300ft colored Jacobsville sandstone cliffs and the remote and exquisitely beautiful North Beach. The return trail on the island’s western shore features remarkable vistas of Lake Superior. Much of the trail is shaded by lush hardwood forests. Exposed sections (atop cliffs) blanket runners with cool breezes off of Lake Superior. Trail includes single track, two track, and narrow dirt roads.

At 333 miles (289.4 nautical miles), the Race to Mackinac is the oldest annual freshwater distance race in the world. ‘The Mac’ starts at the Chicago Lighthouse, just off Navy Pier and continues to Mackinac Island. 2016 marks the 108th running of the Race to Mackinac in which over 350 boats compet. The Race has also amassed a strong following using technology and social networking; it can be followed virtually using Facebook, Twitter and its Race tracking interface.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park - 30th Anniversary Battery D Civil War Encampment

History comes alive at Fort Wilkins. Battery D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery, a Civil War era living history group returns to Fort Wilkins for its 31st annual weekend encampment. The weekend event will be open to park visitors from 8 AM to 8 PM on Friday and Saturday and 8 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. Battery D will interpret army life of the period, demonstrating artillery and small arms drills, period cooking and soldiers’ pastimes. A Michigan State or Out of State Recreation Passport is required for entry into the park.

8th Annual Marquette Trail 50 Ultramarathon

The course consists of a 50 kilometer and 50 mile event. Also, new this year the course will include a loop from the new start-finish area (NTN-Forestville Trailhead) to Tourist Park (the old start-finish area) on new single-track. The course is mostly single-track climbing the 4 peaks: Sugarloaf, Top-of-the World, Bareback, and Hogsback outcrops. All the peaks have views of Lake Superior and some of the trail runs along the lake. Most of the trail is easy to moderate running with a few significant climbs and technical areas.
Also new this year is the Ultramarathon Relay - form a team and run the trails Friday before the solo event on Saturday, more details on our website.

The first 100 registered cars received a goodie bag full of great items and a great gift supplied by the local merchants and automotive suppliers. There will be music, activities, food and displays through out the day. This is a paid entrance fee show, with judging by the car owners. Our show benefits our local vets and the WWP. We are a non profit organization.

The GREAT RACE from the Lower Falls to Lake Superior; Start the morning with this 17 1/2 mile, two-person professional canoe race as the paddlers brave the waters of the Tahquamenon River from the Lower Tahquamenon Falls to Lake Superior. A shorter (6 1/2 mile) one-person race begins at 3:30 at the mouth of the Tahquamenon River. A fun run for amateur paddlers is also offered. MCRA members conclude the event with a banquet and awards program.
