FAMILY HISTORY MONTH info sessions with the John. M. Longyear Research Library

In celebration of October as Family History Month, the John M. Longyear Research Library will be hosting several information sessions, to help genealogists conduct research using the library’s resources. The sessions are, “On the Street Where Grandpa Lived” using city directories and gazetteers on October 8, “Reporting From The Past”, finding obituaries and other town news on October 22 and “More Than a Pretty Face”, using yearbooks and school records on October 29.

All three sessions begin at 6:30 for an hour in the Library located on the second floor of the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring St. Marquette. The librarians Rosemary Michelin and Beth Gruber will answer questions about using the collection and share genealogy tips. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Mackinac Island Halloween (Samhain) Weekend

In the celtic world, Samhain marks the end of summer and the beginning of the new year or winter and a time to commemorate the souls of the blessed dead. With the rise of Christianity, it was changed to Halloween and remains a joyous time of family reunion. Here on Mackinac, we celebrate both traditions. Have fun with the kids Trick or Treating downtown, Haunts of Mackinac Tour and then gear up for some great grown up Halloween parties at the downtown pubs.
The Island shops work hard to clear out their inventory with great discounts and sales. Be sure to browse on Main Street, Market Street and at the shops at Grand Hotel. This makes a perfect weekend to skip out on Black Friday and get a head start on holiday shopping.

UP 200 and Midnight Run

The UP200 is one of America's premier 12-dog, mid-distance sled dog races and draws mushers from around the United States and Canada. The UP200 is an Iditarod qualifying race. Coinciding with the UP200 is the eight-dog Midnight Run, a race from Marquette to Chatham. The Midnight Run, or MNR, draws premier teams wanting to test their skill on a technically challenging trail.






The JackPine 30 rounds out the weekend’s fun with a six-dog, 30-mile sprint from Gwinn, Michigan to Marquette.

Labatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championship

Join us in St. Ignace, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, home of one of the largest pond hockey tournaments in North America, and the largest tournament in Michigan.

The Labatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championship will be played on Moran Bay, part of beautiful Lake Huron, one of the only locations where our 'pond' is actually one of the Great Lakes!

In 2014 we had 192 teams, from 11 states, play 316 games! We have several age and skill divisions, so your team can compete against others of the same skill level.

Format of the games is: 4 on 4 hockey with NO GOALIES on thirty 75 'x 150' outside rinks with snow bank boards played on the 'wild ice' of Moran Bay in Lake Huron.

Teams are guaranteed three games, and division winners will receive Labatt's sportsgear and a hardwood championship cup.

Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival

The annual Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival Mountain Bike race includes 16- and 32-mile point-to-point cross-country distance races and the Junior Chain Drive youth races. All participants for the 16- and 32-mile races receive a free jersey. The cross-country races traverse the Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids trail system in Hancock and include miles of singletrack and lots of elevation change. The Junior Chain Drive starts and ends at the Portage Health campus, using a single-track trail in a wooded area east of the hospital.

Soo Locks Engineers Weekend 2015

Three events in one day! Get up close and personal with Lake Freighters this Engineers Day. Visitors are able to walk out across the walls of the Soo Locks and explore the historic buildings 9am-3pm free admission. Cloverland Electric Cooperative will host its annual hydroelectric plant open house 9am to 4pm free admission. The Sault Arts, Crafts and Family Fun Fair will sprawl across the City Hall lawn overlooking historic Water Street and the St. Mary’s River 10am-5pm.

29th Annual International Bridge Walk

Please join us young and old, physically fit or fitness challenged, to enjoy the fantastic views and the resultant pictures that will last a lifetime as we walk across the International Bridge. Best of all, there’s no admission fee, no long waits, and no sweltering heat to contend with, since the walk steps off at 9am sharp.














Organizers remind walkers to bring a passport or other approved I.D. found at the Soo Area Info, International Bridge Customs section of this site. (PLEASE, contact the Sault Ste. 26th Annual North Country 100 Bike Race

Location: Sunday Lake, Wakefield
Riders will travel over rolling terrain, past lakes and forests and enjoy the wildflowers and scenery of the Upper Peninsula. Routes for the 100 mile and 100 kilometer are designed with more experienced riders in mind. The 25 mile route follows a moderate terrain. All three tours are open to any rider aged 12 and older, so riders should keep in mind their own limits. Check Point/Aid stations will be provided along the route, upon return a meal will be available. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All riders are required to have helmets.





100 Mile Tour - Must be registered before July 13, 2013 and a minimum of 10 riders required to hold the 100 Mile Tour.

Rendezvous in the Sault

Rendezvous in the Sault is a living history event that will take place along Historic Water Street at the City Hall Grounds and at the Historic Homes. Local and visiting historical re-enactors will set up camps and displays with presentations and demonstrations on military and civilian life in the period of 1668-1840. Food, music, dancing, cannon firing, storytelling, crafts and games will be just some of the fun things to see and do on Saturday and Sunday of the last full weekend of July.

9th Annual Great Deer Chase Mountain Bike Race

The 9th Annual Great Deer Chase mountain bike race will be held on August 16 at the Swedetown Trail system off Swedetown Road in Calumet. The event, held in conjunction with Calumet's Heritage Days, will feature 15 and 28 mile cross country races as well as 3 and 4.25 mile youth races. There will also be a 40-yard Fawn Chase untimed youth race.


Races start at 10 am (Eastern) at the Calumet Colosseum. An awards ceremony will be held at 4 pm. Registration forms will be available online and registration will be open at Cross Country Sports in downtown Calumet.

Tahquamenon Wilderness Canoe Race

"The Great Race from the Lower Falls to Lake Superior" Start the morning with this 17 1/2 mile, two-person professional canoe race as the paddlers brave the waters of the Tahquamenon River from the Lower Tahquamenon Falls to Lake Superior. A shorter (6 1/2 mile) one-person race begins at 3:30 at the mouth of the Tahquamenon River. A fun run for amateur paddlers is also offered. MCRA members conclude the event with a banquet and awards program.
