One of the best ways to enjoy the peacefulness and natural splendor of this area is from the seat of a canoe or kayak, and the Keweenaw Water Trail allows paddlers of all skill levels to do just that. Along the trail, they experience the history and scenic beauty of Lake Superior and the Portage Waterway, with a marked and mapped route running well over 100 miles. Access sites, camping, both primitive and developed, and other services are available along the Water Trail, as well as all the amenities a tourist location can offer when the trail goes through some of the U.P.'s favorite small towns.
The unique geography of the Keweenaw Peninsula affords one uncommon feature - the ability to start and stop in the same place without backtracking. An average paddler could leave one location, and, after a number days of enjoying the Keweenaw, be back where they started. Trips of any duration can be enjoyed in the clear, deep waters of Lake Superior, the seclusion of quiet inland lakes, or the protection of the Portage Waterway.
