Keweenaw National Historical Park

Established in 1992, this is one of America's youngest national parks. The Keweenaw National Historical Park commemorates the heritage of copper mining on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Working with numerous cooperating sites from Ontonagon to Copper Harbor, the park tells the stories of mines, machinery and the people connected to this country's first and richest mineral rush. This includes two national Historic Landmark Districts; 22 Heritage Sites featuring mining, mineral, military, maritime and homesteading activities; and unique wood, steel and stone architecture.

All this surrounded by the natural beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula and nearly 200 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Although the park is not yet fully developed, visitors can get a complete experience from the fully operational cooperating sites owned by partners of the park that are private, municipal, non-profit or state entities.
