A landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here.
On a southern bluff overlooking the majestic Straits of Mackinac is the stately stone palisade of Fort Mackinac. Inside the fort walls are 14 original buildings filled with interactive displays and period furnishings. Hear bugle music, rifle fire, and a cannon blast. Dance to a 19th-century tune. Drill with soldiers. Watch a court martial reenactment. Play Victorian children's games. Visit historic downtown buildings.
From Native American baskets to present-day paintings of the island by residents, The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum showcases historic treasures and inspires creativity in others. The art museum brings together Mackinac art created over the centuries. Through the use of audiovisual and hands-on techniques and special programs, you can fully immerse yourself in the art. Open daily early May through mid October.
