The year is 1908 and all over the Keweenaw Peninsula mansions are being built by wealthy copper mine owners. But here in Laurium the largest and most opulent of them all has just been completed. Built for Captain Thomas H. Hoatson, owner of the C & A Mining Co., no expense was spared in constructing this 13,000 sq. ft. 40-room mansion. When miners were making 25 cents an hour, this house was built at a cost of $50,000. On the tour you will learn about the history of this mansion and see the silver-leaf covered ceilings; embossed and gilded elephant hide wall coverings and stained glass; grand triple staircase of hand-carved oak; wall-size built-in icebox made of marble, tile and oak; panoramic landscape mural and gilded tile fireplace; 1300 sq. ft. ballroom; two room-size cedar closets; 9 bedrooms with private bathrooms; turntable in the 2-story carriage house. Each room is uniquely decorated with period antiques from the Copper Country.
