Snowmobile Trail Report

Updated: 02/02/2012

Western Upper Peninsula - By County:

  • Gogebic County & Ontonagon County:  While the days are milder this week, overnight grooming is being planned weather permitting. Day time temps will be in the 30's through Sunday with temps at night in the 20's. Best riding is early in the day as trails will soften up by mid-afternoon with the milder weather.
    • Gogebic Range Trail Authority Trails: Trails overall are in fair to good condition. Grooming is planned for tonight weather permitting. 11N has a water spot on it in which you can get around. Signs are posted so please use caution. Also on trails 11N and 160 closer to the lake the snow is marginal. LOGGING IS PLANNED OFF SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD SO WATCH FOR SIGNS AND PLOWED AREAS. 11S is in fair to good condition, logging is planned for the remaining of the season closer to the Wisconsin border signs are posted, use caution. Please remember the logging trucks have the right of way so when and if you see them please pull over....
    • Lake Gogebic: Groomers went out last night grooming and will groom at night weather permitting. Trails are in fair to good condition. Watch corners, they may be icy and obey stop signs PLEASE!
    • Watersmeet: All trails are being groomed at night weather permitting. Overall trails are in fair to good condition. Again watch for icy corners.
    • Ontonagon/Silver City/White Pine: It's been in the 30's the last couple of days, but surprising after talking to all our riders, they say the trails are holding up pretty good, getting a little soft, and there is a little water, but for the most part the trails are still in pretty good shape. The next few days are going to stay in the 30's, so that's not going to help, but with the night time temps in the 20's, the trails do get a chance to set up.
    • Bruce Crossing: (1/31) 11" base. Trails are groomed daily and in good to excellent condition.
    • Twin Lakes/Greenland: 35" cover.  We are holding our own with the temps. Its been overcast every day since temps in high 20's-low 30's and that definately helps us in that we don't lose so much snow-it just settles in. Our groomers are able to go out every nite. Trails in this area hold up until late afternoon and get a little choppy from all of the traffic (the paddletracks also cause havoc with the trails) Most everyone riding understands that the traffic is heavier because no one else in the midwest has ridable snow.
  • Houghton County & Keweenaw County: 23-24" cover. The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and groomers are out working on them. Trails are in very good condition. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails….they have the right of way!!! And please watch out for deer on the trails also. Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges. The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.
  • Baraga County: Due to the warm temps the trails are soft and not holding up very well. As long as weather permits, the groomers will be grooming at night and lets hope it cools down soon. When going thru the Baraga State Park please stay on the trail - DO NOT ride thru the park.  #159 trail  is open and groomed :) Chassell trail north is rough if things go well it will be groomed Monday. There is alot of wet areas! To get to Houghton you can take #159 out of Baraga to 8/15 to 109.

As always, our trails are groomed,"Tree to Tree".
  • Menominee County: (1/25)  4" base. Trails are in good condition.
  • Alger County
    • Munising: Today we will be running three groomer shifts with two going out at night and the third going at around 5 p.m. All tails will be groomed at least once with the heavily traveled trails (Coalwood, Buckhorn, Bear Trap, Christmas) getting groomed twice.
    • Grand Marais: I talked to some snowmobilers yesterday evening and they said the trails were good, a bit soft, but holding up well, away from town. The NWS shows our trail system as having anywhere from 10 to 30 inches on the ground this morning. The snowbelt which starts about 5 miles to about 15 miles south of the lake has the most. Those trails were in very good condition, which is most of our trail system! Trail 89 is a bit thin and probably has some pavement showing, nothing that can't be dealt with. Norm kept the groomers in last night because it was too warm. The last I noticed yesterday was 38 degrees around 5:00 p.m. Yuck! I'm seeing temps of 32 in town and 30 in the snowbelt right now. The forecast is calling for mid to high 30's all week. It was very slushy around town yesterday and I heard the ski trails were pretty soft and sticky. This El Nina thing is really messing with our winter but we have a good solid base after last weekend's storm so we should be good until the next one moves in next week.
  • Delta County: no report
  • Schoolcraft County:
    • Seney: (1/31) 4" base. Good condition.  Don and I went riding today. Put on 110 miles. Now I can say first hand that the trails are in good condition. One snow storm sure makes a difference. The railroad grade on trail 8 is in good shape now. It got up to 37 today, But it didnt rain as predicted. That just ain't right. Thats a senctence you shouldnt ever have to read in a trail report. No damage at all up in the snow belt. The last few miles into town showed a little. The nice white snow isn't as white anymore.
    • Manistique:(1/31) 4" base. A little thin in places in town, but you can get around. Trail 2 east Bear Creek Swamp is frozen yeah. Northern sectors are Good to Very Good. Big Springs has re-opened, Jack Pine and Camel Riders area is Good to great. The farther north the better conditions.

Eastern Upper Peninsula - By County

  • Luce County:  4" base. There is good snow north to the falls and pine stump with good late season riding conditions. The trails are in fair to good condition. Be careful on corners as the warm weather has made the trail icy.

    • Trail 45 to Co Rd 500: good condition up to the falls.

      • Trail #49 - Sault to Kinross: 3-6" base. Trail is in poor to fair condition. Watch for the water spots to go around just south of town on the powerline. When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road. Lots of water.
      • Trail #49, #494, #472 Kinross loop & South to Pickford: 2-5" base. Trail is in fair to good condition.

    • Brimley: (1/24) 3" base. Trails are groomed and in fair condition.
    • Paradise: (2/1) Sure am gettin tired of this up and down weather, I feel more like a weatherman than a trail reporter. The temps got up to 37 here yesterday and only down to 34 last night. Right now, its noon, it is 32.....that`s alittle better! We did get the groomers out last night on the Falls trail and the Stump trail. Both drivers turned around half way out cause they just were wasting their time and didn`t want to dig up any dirt. They both said the trail was in great shape.....FLAT. We stayed out of the south swamp trail for fears of breaking it up. It is ridable but be careful. I`ll post again tomorrow to keep you up to date. Weatherman (groomer) Chris
      • Point Trail #452 & #453:
      • Falls Trail #45:
      • Pine Stump Trail #8 west:
      • South Trail #8 to Hulbert:
      • Paradise Town Trail:
    • Eckerman: 4" base.  Trails are groomed and in good condition. Twenty six degrees this morning in Strongs. No extreme temperatures yesterday and it is supposed to be 35 for a high today. Still more than we would like but we have no choice in the matter. All except Hulbert was groomed yesterday. Hulbert will definitely be done tonight. We hope the weather will allow us to get back on schedule and groom everything tonight. I-500 at the Soo will bring in lots of riders this week. We are hanging on to our snow but the warm weather hasn't improved things. I am upgrading the trails to good today because we were able to groom last night and it froze down overnight. Trails should hold OK for most of the day.
    • Drummond Island: (1/29) 1" base. Trails are in poor condition. Two inches of fresh snow fell yesterday ...it's a new start but it's not enought yet. It is enought to provide lubercation fo the slides though.
  • Mackinac County:
    • St Ignace: (1/31)  Things are certainly looking up around here. After our surprise 4-6" on Friday, we got another little bit here and there yesterday, and in a strange little band another 4" on Castle Rock Rd! Since I have the Iggy groomer parked for drag maintenance for a couple of days, Wayne brought the Brevort groomer to town last night (and learned how long that Round Lake-Castle Rock trail actually is!) He reports that things groomed up wonderfully and our trails are in good to very good condition everywhere. Yes things are a bit thin, but for the snow we have, there is no gravel showing, and things a flat, smooth and fast. There are 3 or so slush holes on West Burma, West of the hot dog stop (restrooms) all the other holes froze up, or drained over the weekend. The RR Grade is in better condition then all of last year. It is 35d today, and is forecast to be around 32 all week, but trails should hold no problem for the weekend. Unless we get some more surprise snow, we are holding the groomers until Thursday or Friday night, and will touch things up for the weekend. Still watch for ice in teh corners, and the occasional slush hole, especially on West Burma, but otherwise enjoy the trails.
    • Curtis: (1/31) 4" base. Another 2 inches of fresh snow. Trails are groomed, they do not have alot of snow on them but they are good to fair and will get you north of here where there is more snow.
      • Trail 45 to Newberry: Good condition
      • Trail 2 to Gould City, Engadine & Naubinway: Fair condition.
      • Trail 43 to Germfask: Fair condition.
    • Les Cheneaux/Cedarville/Hessel: (1/31) 1" base. All the trails have a good base with thin snow, ice and water holes still are common please ride with care.
Trails were last groomed on 19th except the 1-75 to cedarville was groomed on the 30th.
