You can spend days exploring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Alger County’s many outdoor wonders and never get bored. But you can also relax on majestic beaches, spend quiet time in our forests and join the fun at numerous events.
ALGER COUNTY ADVENTURE
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, stretching from Munising to Grand Marais, is a proud centerpiece of the Great Lakes region. Grab your camera, because this national treasure boasts 220-foot sandstone cliffs streaked with colored minerals and caves carved by wind and water. For an up-close view, take a guided kayak or stand up paddleboard tour or one of the Pictured Rocks Cruises between May and mid-October.
Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours allow you to gaze into ghostly shipwrecks of the past in the Alger Underwater Preserve. Take the ferry to Grand Island and explore beautiful cliff formations and communities of the past by foot, mountain bike or bus tour or enjoy one of four other boat trips offered in Munising.
Hike or drive to more than 16 Alger County waterfalls, many of which turn to ice pillars, curtains and caves in the winter.
Eben Ice Caves in Rock River Canyon Wilderness is one of the most popular of these unique ice features. There are also nine historic lighthouses, such as the Au Sable Light Station.
Motorcyclists rank CR H-58, from Munising to Grand Marais, one of the top rides in the country. The route, which winds through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, is breathtaking.
Alger County is home to some of the finest beaches including Au Train, Sand Point, Twelve Mile and Waterfall Beach on Grand Island. Grand Sable Dunes is on the east border of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This popular destination also offers memorable events hosted by several local organizations. These include Michigan Ice Fest in February, Trenary Outhouse Classic in February, Pictured Rocks Days 2nd weekend of June, July 4th Festivities, Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium, Alger County Fair, Grand Marais Art & Music Festival in August, and the Munising Bay Cruisers Classic Car Show in September.
