Outdoor Adventure & Recreation

Immerse yourself in the U.P.

Hiking | Biking | ATV & Equestrian Trails

Outdoors. It’s what the U.P. is renowned for. What we have an abundance of. What locals and visitors can’t spend enough time in. So while there are indoor fun and inspiration in the U.P. (definitely take time to experience it), this is not a place for couch sitting and seeing our world from your window.

Get outside. Out of your vehicle. Up close to our abundant, diverse, ever-changing natural surroundings. Feel the cool spray of roaring waterfalls. The warmth of soft sand beneath your bare feet. Hear the high-pitched whistling of bald eagles soaring overhead. The deafening crash of waves against ancient rocks. Watch the sky shimmer in dazzling neon green and orange on Northern Lights nights. Breathe in the spicy scent of cedars. The mossy, earthy forest floor. Taste the nutty richness of wild morels and the sweet/tart flavor of deep red thimbleberries. Our outdoors will magnify your senses.

Hiking: Your closest encounter with nature

Lace up your walking shoes or hiking boots. There is no better way to immerse yourself in the wonders of the U.P. outdoors than on foot.

Two of Michigan’s longest hiking trails are the:

Iron Belle which stretches more than 2,000 miles from the western tip of the U.P. to Belle Isle in Detroit. It uses many existing trails including more than 1,000 miles of the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST), the longest federally designated hiking trail in the nation. Nearly half of the NCNST’s 1,000 Michigan miles go across the U.P. Two must-see sections of the trail are:

Straits State Park in St. Ignace where you can view the engineering wonder, the Mackinac Bridge, the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world, as well as the Father Marquette National Memorial. Continue from the park into Michigan’s second oldest city, St. Ignace, and follow the boardwalk along the Lake Huron shoreline. Hikers can continue through seventy miles of the Hiawatha National Forest to ancient sand dunes and along the Niagara Escarpment.

Another stretch of the NCNST topping most day hikers’ and backpackers’ lists is the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore Trail. The trail’s 42.4 miles between Grand Marais and Munising take you past lighthouses, waterfalls, towering sandstone cliffs, perched dunes and Twelvemile Beach.

Other popular U.P. trails include:

Bike Country: from leisurely coasting to grueling climbs.

Biking

Whatever your biking style, the U.P. has the scenic byways, the varied terrain and thrilling races to create hours of outdoor adventures for you, your family and friends. Pedal casually along the shores of three Great Lakes and down wooded trails. Ride to thundering waterfalls or out to glistening lighthouses. Our accolades include the League of American Bicyclists naming Houghton and Marquette in their list of top Bicycle Friendly Communities in the nation.

Love extreme rides? So do we. Here you can face the merciless challenges that our epicenters of mountain biking, Keweenaw Peninsula, Marquette and the Porcupine Mountains, deliver. The Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails are designated a Silver Level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bicycling Association ― one of 10 trails in the world to earn this coveted ranking!

In addition to the trails shown on the map below, there are thousands of miles of logging roads, abandoned railroad grades, state and national forest trails, single tracks, off-season cross country ski trails and low-traffic highways that welcome lone riders to tour groups. Choose your route, there are more miles to explore after today’s ride.

Some of our favorite places to ride:

Iron Belle, the U.P.’s longest biking trail, traverses from Ironwood to the west to St. Ignace to the east. Separate from the hiking trail, this route uses many of the U.P.’s existing bike paths, bike lanes and signed, designated biking routes as it follows the southern edge of the Upper Peninsula. Enjoy pristine forests, beautiful views of Lake Michigan and stops in towns along U.S 2.

Mackinac Island may not have cars, but it has bicycles (the island licenses 85,000 bikes each year, mostly for visitors). Bring your own bike across on the ferry or rent when you arrive. The scenic 8.2-mile trail around the island takes one to three hours to complete depending on how often you stop to shop, explore the historic sites or be awestruck by the coastal vistas.

Fayette Historic State Park trail offers five miles of scenic hardwood forests, white dolomite bluffs overlooking Snail Shell Harbor and a restored, historic townsite that once manufactured charcoal pig iron. The 17-mile bike ride out to the park on CR-183 (south of U.S. 2) is a great way to see the Garden Peninsula and the galleries and restaurants that hug the Big Bay de Noc.

Marquette Trails offer a family-friendly ride on the Presque Isle Loop to a Bronze Level IMBA Ride Center on the RAMBA trail.

Whether you want to lope across grassy meadows astride your horse or rev your ATV engines on twisting forest trails, you will make memories here.

Explore our wilderness on horseback. Michigan continues to expand the number of equestrian trails across the U.P. Visit here for a listing of Michigan horseback riding trails for your solo or group adventures.

Near Escanaba there are eight trail options including the:
Escanaba to Hermansville Rail-Trail, a 25.5-mile crushed stone surface that takes you through heavily wooded areas and to scenic overlooks.

Bay De Noc Grand Island National Recreation Trail parallels the Whitefish River between Rapid River (near U.S. 2) and Ackerman Lake near Munising (on State Highway 94). This 40-mile trail is relatively level with hilly stretches and occasional stream crossings.
Oakwood Horse Trail
Pine Marten Run Trail
The Marquette area offers six nearby trail options including the:
Coalwood Trail
Iron Ore Heritage Trail
Grand Marais Trail

Near Sault Ste. Marie, you can ride 32 miles to Brimley on the remote and peaceful Soo Strong Trail.

Several campgrounds welcome you and your horse:

Luce County:
Headquarters Lake Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp
Menominee County:
Cedar River North Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp
Schoolcraft County (along the Pine Marten Run Trail):
Ironjaw Lake Dispersed Campsite
Swan Lake Dispersed Campsite
Triangle Lake Dispersed Campsite

Ride thousands of ATV/ORV thrill-seeker miles.

You can find days of adventure on 3,000 miles of snowmobile trails that the U.P. switches to ORV and ATV trails from spring through fall. Want more trails?  You’ll find Michigan’s largest closed loop ATV trail system on Drummond Island where novices to experts can find their adrenaline rush. State and national forests also offer thousands of miles of ATV/ORV trails; just check individual forest maps for restricted areas. You will also find that many ATV/ORV trails are near lodgings and campgrounds. This lets you easily ride from sunrise to sunset then regroup to swap stories about your favorite places over a hearty meal or around a crackling campfire.
